Where Does Your Lighthouse Shine? || Day 1
This devotional series came suddenly to me last night after church. My husband taught an amazing lesson in kids church on Wednesday night (last night).
When we got home I was thinking about what I needed to write for my blog when this title "Where Does Your Lighthouse Shine?" came booming like a trumpet in my ears.
I knew it was the title for my next devotional series.
In my husbands lesson he talked about being the light. The light of the world, the light of Jesus, the light that people in darkness are looking for. It was powerful. He wasn't sure how it went because it was more of a last minute lesson...I know a lot of preachers get that, they have a lesson or sermon prepared then God gives them something completely different.
Even though it was last minute, I knew it was God ordained. It was just what I needed to hear as well at the kids.
The focus scriptures that will be the main scriptures throughout this devotional series is:
Matthew 5:14-15 (New Living Translation)
"You are the light of the world - like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house."
Lighthouses are used to help guide ships to shore, to a safe place. They bring light to the thick darkness that comes to the sea. The amazing thing about lighthouses is they can be seen miles from shore. Why is that? Because the light pierces the darkness.
Have you ever turned off all of the lights in your house at night and the light a match or lighter or even a handle? (If you haven't, try it) It's crazy how all of a sudden that one little flame lights up the whole room and you suddenly feel peace and comfort in it.
From that one, single flame, you feel peace. You feel safe. A lighthouse is symbolic of safety and peace.
Jesus wants us to be the light of the world, in the same way a lighthouse is the light for ships out on the sea. In a dark and daring place, it provides light and peace.
We can be that for the world, giving them light in their darkness through Jesus. Showing them they can have a place of rest in their hectic world. PEACE in their hectic world.
This is what our lighthouse should represent. We should be allowing our light to shine on the things of God. Hope, peace, joy, temperance. If we aren't letting our light shine on good things, why are we letting our light shine at all?
Why would a lighthouse be in the middle of the ocean brining false hope to sailors? Leading them to "shore" but only to bring disappointment and hurt. No one would trust that light if that was where it would bring them. It would be meaningless.
John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life."
Let these words ring in your ear today..."Where Does You Lighthouse Shine?"
Are you being the light of the world that Jesus has called us to be? Are you emanating your light that leads to Jesus? Are you being a light for those in the darkness?
Focus on where your light is shining today. Challenge yourself to be the light that someone needs.
I pray that God helps you be the light you need to be, just as I ask him to help me be the light I need to be.
Pray that you are able to be what God needs you to be for the lost!
Do you know where your lighthouse is shining?
