Jesus, help me want YOU more than anything
A couple days a week I babysit for some friends at their house, and it works out great because my husband works with the husband so I get to enjoy a morning drive with my Jakey and my son Josh.
On the radio yesterday morning Natalie Grants song "More Than Anything" was playing...I never really listened to the words before because my mind is normally in a thousand other places when I'm driving. But this morning something told me to stop and listen. Obviously Jesus told me to stop and listen...so I did.
As soon as I cleared my mind, the chorus came on..."Help me was the healer more than the healing, help me was the savior more than the saving, help me want the giver more than the giving...help me want you Jesus, more than anything."
These words struck me so hard. Not only the healer, giver and savior part....but the healing, saving and giving part.
How many times can I look back on my life and actually be able to say that I wanted Jesus to be my healer more than I wanted a healing? When did I want Jesus to be my giver more than I wanted to be the one giving?
What's the big deal anyways about these words? I'll tell you.
When we allow our life to get to the point of wanting what God gives us more than wanting Him...that can be detrimental to our spirituality. We then begin to expect things from God without even doing anything. We expect to receive what we think we deserve, rather than putting in our effort and being rewarded.
I've felt like this so many times. I do the bare minimum and think that it's enough...or think that because of the things I think I'm doing are big, I'll get this great blessing in return.
God does reward us for our faithfulness, don't think I'm telling you otherwise...and He does bless us when we need it. But it's like putting little to no effort into a presentation or a paper and we expect a passing grade or the promotion. Life doesn't work that way.
We need to allow our minds and our hearts to be more wrapped up in God and his presence than the things we receive from Him. And just because we go to church on Sunday's doesn't mean we are going to make it to Heaven. There are steps that we need to follow to be saved, there are things we need to do in our lives to live righteously before Jesus. We can't want the saving more than we want the Savior. It doesn't work that way. We need to want Jesus before we can even begin to understand what comes after.
This is something big in my life...there's times where I have to catch myself because I begin in allow my mind to lose focus of whats truly important. My relationship with Jesus, my longing and yearning, my deep and desperate want for Him is the single most important thing. When all of that begins to replenish, renew and rejuvenate my soul...this passion that's inside of me becomes stronger, more powerful and deeper than before. This is what pushes me to be better for my family and my church. This is what launches me to another dimension with my Lord.
Something to focus on today is making sure your mind is truly focused on God. Truly focused. Allowing yourself to grow in him, yearn for him, find yourself in Him. Allowing Him to change you from the inside out. Allowing Him to guide your steps when you are out of control, allowing Him to quite your mind when you're in a frantic flurry of a mess.
Allow Him to bring you back to the simple, child like times of your faith when all you wanted was just Him. Want Him more than anything else in this world.
